Limited Farmer Participation in Digital Markets

Low farmer engagement in digital platforms like e-NAM

Ministries & Focus Areas

Causal Factors

The limited digital literacy among farmers and inadequate digital infrastructure in rural areas are primary causes hindering participation in digital agricultural markets like e-NAM and AGMARKNET. Additionally, the lack of awareness about these platforms and perceived complexities in their use further deter engagement. Institutional barriers, such as insufficient training and support mechanisms, compound the problem.

Current Schemes / Missions

The Government of India has launched schemes like the e-NAM and Digital India to enhance digital market participation. However, these face implementation challenges such as uneven internet connectivity, inadequate farmer training, and limited local-level infrastructure, which restrict their full potential.

Proposal

Implement a comprehensive digital literacy and engagement program using [ INTV 6 ] and [ INTV 4 ] to educate and enable farmers. Develop mobile applications that simplify access and navigation of digital marketplaces, supported by [ INTV 5 ] to track participation and resolve issues. To build systemic resilience, establish a parallel support infrastructure through [ INTV 7 ], offering skills training and alternative access points to ensure broader reach and adoption.

Over the mid-term, the intervention can evolve to integrate with local cooperatives and farmer groups, fostering structural maturity and widespread institutional adoption.

In the long-term, the intervention should aim to create an interconnected ecosystem where digital and physical markets blend seamlessly, enhancing scalability and penetration into rural areas.

This solution positions India as a global leader in digital agricultural market participation within 5–10 years, leveraging technology to empower farmers and enhance market transparency.

Potential risks include technology resistance and insufficient training effectiveness. To mitigate these, strengthen the [ INTV 6 ] outreach and bolster [ INTV 4 ] features for feedback-driven improvement. Add [ INTV 3 ] for real-time monitoring and fraud detection, ensuring platform integrity and user trust.
