Solar and Wind Integration in Mining
Lack of policies requiring renewables in coal mining blocks sustainable energy transition
The lack of clear government policies for integrating solar and wind power in coal mining operations can be attributed to several causes. Primarily, the dominance of the coal industry, which is deeply entrenched in the energy sector, creates a resistance to change. Additionally, institutional inertia, where existing frameworks are slow to adapt to renewable energy integration, further exacerbates the issue. Economic factors such as the initial high cost of renewable infrastructure installation, coupled with technological challenges in retrofitting old coal plants, also play significant roles.
The Government of India has launched initiatives like the National Solar Mission and Wind Energy Mission. However, these face implementation challenges such as limited financial resources, inadequate grid infrastructure, and regulatory bottlenecks that hinder seamless integration with coal mining operations.
Implement an integrated policy framework using [ INTV 1 ] to establish a central policy-making body focused on renewable integration in mining. This should be supported by [ INTV 2 ] to develop SOPs and design innovative financial models, and [ INTV 5 ] to monitor compliance through a government systems app. To enhance systemic resilience, incorporate [ INTV 7 ] by developing alternative infrastructure and skills training programs.
In the mid-term, the intervention will evolve by expanding the institutional network and enhancing policy maturity through [ INTV 1 ] and [ INTV 2 ].
In the long-term, the intervention will deepen renewable integration, fostering ecosystem effects such as increased stakeholder collaboration and technological innovation.
This solution positions India as a global leader in sustainable mining practices within 5–10 years.
Challenges may arise from resistance to policy changes and inadequate technological adaptation in [ INTV 1 ] and [ INTV 2 ]. To mitigate risks, enhance [ INTV 7 ] by boosting R&D for technological advancements and consider adding [ INTV 8 ] to engage with the global tech ecosystem for cutting-edge solutions.
